State Flags

For some states, you will see the term "by ratification" in parentheses. These are the original 13 colonies and were admitted into the union by the act of ratifying the Constitution. Those states joining later needed the specific approval of congress to join the union.

NOTE:At some point in the future, I may add the history leading up to statehood for each of the states. Some states had a rather colorful history, not to mention that several were independent republics before becoming a state, as well as a few that dropped out (or were kicked out) of the union during the Civil War.

Alabama: Admitted to the union December 14^th, 1819, as the 22^nd state.

Alaska: Admitted to the union January 3^rd, 1959, as the 49^th state.

Arkansas: Admitted to the union June 15^th, 1836, as the 25^th state.

California: Admitted to the union September 9^th, 1850, as the 31^st state.

Colorado: Admitted to the union August 1^st, 1876, as the 38^th state.

Connecticut: Admitted to the union (by ratification) January 9^th, 1788, as the 5^th state.

Delaware: Admitted to the union (by ratification) December 7^th, 1787, as the 1^st state.

Florida: Admitted to the union March 3^rd, 1845, as the 27^th state.

Georgia: Admitted to the union (by ratification) January 2^nd, 1788, as the 4^th state.

Hawaii: Admitted to the union August 21^st, 1959, as the 50^th state.

Idaho: Admitted to the union July 3^rd, 1890, as the 43^rd state.

Illinois: Admitted to the union December 3^rd, 1818, as the 21^st state.

Indiana: Admitted to the union December 11^th, 1816, as the 19^th state.

Iowa: Admitted to the union December 28^th, 1846, as the 29^th state.

Kansas: Admitted to the union January 29^th, 1861, as the 34^th state.

Kentucky: Admitted to the union June 1^st, 1792, as the 15^th state.

Louisiana: Admitted to the union April 30^th, 1812, as the 18^th state.

Maine: Admitted to the union March 15^th, 1820, as the 23^rd state.

Maryland: Admitted to the union (by ratification) April 28^th, 1788, as the 7^th state.

Massachusetts: Admitted to the union (by ratification) February 6^th, 1788, as the 6^th state.

Michigan: Admitted to the union January 26^th, 1837, as the 26^th state.

Minnesota: Admitted to the union May 11^th, 1858 as the 32^nd state.

Missouri: Admitted to the union August 10^th, 1821, as the 24^th state.

Montana: Admitted to the union November 8^th, 1889, as the 41^st state.

Nebraska: Admitted to the union March 1^st, 1867, as the 37^th state.

Nevada: Admitted to the union October 31^st, 1864, as the 36^th state.

New Hampshire: Admitted to the union (by ratification) June 21^st, 1788, as the 9^th state,
and the last state needed to adopt the Constitution, thus creating the new nation of
The United States of America.

New Jersey: Admitted to the union (by ratification) December 18^th, 1787, as the 3^rd state.

New Mexico: Admitted to the union January 6^th, 1912, as the 47^th state.

New York: Admitted to the union (by ratification) July 26^th, 1788, as the 11^th state.

North Carolina: Admitted to the union (by ratification) November 21^st, 1789, as the 12^th state.

North Dakota: Admitted to the union November 2^nd, 1889, as the 39^th state .

Ohio: Admitted to the union March 1^st, 1803, as the 17^th state.
Admission finally approved by President Eisenhower on August 7^th, 1953.

Oklahoma: Admitted to the union November 16^th, 1907, as the 46^th state.

Oregon: Admitted to the union February 14^th, 1859, as the 33^rd state.

Pennsylvania: Admitted to the union (by ratification) December 12^th, 1787, as the 2^nd state.

Rhode Island: Admitted to the union (by ratification) May 29^th, 1790, as the 13^th state.

South Carolina: Admitted to the union (by ratification) May 23^rd, 1788, as the 8^th state.

South Dakota: Admitted to the union November 2^nd, 1889, as the 40^th state.

Tennessee: Admitted to the union June 1^st, 1796, as the 16^th state.

Texas: Admitted to the union December 29^th, 1845, as the 28^th state.

Utah: Admitted to the union January 4^th, 1896, as the 45^th state.

Vermont: Admitted to the union March 4^th, 1791, as the 14^th state.

Virginia: Admitted to the union (by ratification) June 25^th, 1788, as the 10^th state.

Washington: Admitted to the union November 11^th, 1889, as the 42^nd state.

West Virginia: Admitted to the union June 20^th, 1863, as the 35^th state.

Wisconsin: Admitted to the union May 29^th, 1848, as the 30^th state.

Wyoming: Admitted to the union July 10^th, 1890, as the 44^th state.
