In loving memory of those members of our society who have gone on to the Grand Reunion, and now have all their roadblocks removed.

These memorials are posted in chronological order of their passing.

It is with profound grief and a deep sense of personal loss that we note the passing of a beloved member of our society.

Sam Atkins passed away November 21, 1998 while on a trip to Florida.  I know you will all want to extend your condolences to Marcia.

Marcia,  always know that we are here for you.

To the family of Sam Atkins,

It is with deep sadness that we extend to you our sympathies.  At a time like this words truly do fail us, now our actions will speak and I hope bring a measure of comfort.

That old saying "Time heals all wounds" is true and it does take time.  The hurt will go away, but the loss will remain the same.  Jesus said in John 14:18  "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."

Marcia you and your family are not alone this morning.  You will find strength you've never known before and a peace that only comes from God the Father of us all.

You are in our prayers and thoughts today and will be throughout out the weeks ahead.

I am here, all you have to do is call.

Irene

It is my sad duty to announce to you the passing of Clara Daniell Williams.

Below is the message I just received from her son:

Irene

My Mother died Sunday morning 10:30AM.  I just want you guys to know.

She has fought cancer since 1980.

Her wishes were she never loose her mental capacity and never be in a nursing home.  All this came true for her She was aware of everything on Saturday the 23 September.  She and I went over all her affairs on Saturday.  Saturday evening she was sitting up and alert.  Sunday morning she did not wake up and stopped breathing about 10:30 AM.

Thank you,
Walter

What a great loss to Clara's immediate family and to us, her extended family.

Her scholarship will be available to the coming generations because she did her research, validated it and took the enormous step of publishing it.  If we all did this, even on a very modest scale, our research would be available too.

Authors live for as long as their books survive.

Katherine Fuller
Katherine Crowe Fuller

27 May 1926 ~ 16 October 2016

Although Katherine was never an actual member of the Society, she was the beloved wife and companion of one of our faithful long time members (joining in the first year of the society), John Fuller.  Because of this, we feel it quite appropriate to place a memorial to her memory here.

We deeply regret the need to post this memorial to our beloved Founder.

We would not exist if not for his passion and untiring efforts.  For these efforts, he was awarded our very first Life Member status.

Founding President
Past President: 1998 ~ 2001, 2003 ~ 2007

Irene had been with the society from the very first organizational meeting and, from that point on, served as President for 9 of the first 10 years of our existence, skipping only one year (2002).  It is with great sadness that we post this memorial to our founding term President.

This Society would not exist if not for her tireless efforts and organizational abilities.  For these efforts, she was the second member to be awarded Life Member status.

She was also the dear wife of our long-time (and current) Web Master, who prefers to remember her as she was when she snared him.

Norman Stephen Brazel
Norman Stephen Brazel

22 November 1945 ~ 9 January 2022

Past President 2020 ~ 2021

Norm, although a born and bred Yankee, eventually wised up and married a true Southern Bell, Brenda Abercrombie, who was born and raised in Douglas County.  Norm and Brenda became quite active in the Society with Norm serving as President and Brenda as Secretary.  It is with great sadness that we post this memorial to one of our past Presidents.

Norm led a full and active life.  During this life, he achieved a PhD in Comparative Religions and served in the United States Army, the Boy Scouts of America, the West Georgia Mounted Search and Rescue, the Douglas County Genealogical Society, and the Sons of Norway.  He was also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

L G (apparently these are stand-alone, not being the initials for actual names - or so we believe) retired from AT&T, where he worked for over 40 years, and was an active member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Carroll County.

L G lived a full life and left behind 18 children, grand children and great-grand children.

Founding Vice-President

Sandy often expressed a preference for black and white photos, so that is what we have presented here.

Sandy was a Charter Member of the Society and served as the first Vice-President.  She served on the Douglas County Cemetery Preservation Commission for many years and was also a Systems Analyst for the Federal Government for many years.  Sandy was responsible for presenting a great many programs at Society meetings.  She was also a regular contributor to the Society newsletter.

Anyone interested in the details of her contributions to the Society may search for her name in the yearly Society history files linked on our main History Page.

She will be greatly missed by all.

John Fuller
John Wesley Fuller, Jr.

26 October 1928 ~ 20 August 2023

Founding Member

After having enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the tender age of 17, John served proudly during WWII.  Afterwards, he served in the Navy Reserves.  After leaving the Navy, he married Katherine Crowe (see above) and started his family.

Family meant everything to John and he was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He also had a long career with Southern Railway, retiring after more than 30 years.

A man of many interests and talents, John was a member of the Sweetwater Camera Club, the Douglas County Genealogical Society, and a member of the Safari Club, having made two hunting trips to Africa and one to Russia.  He also was a ham radio operator, a licensed private pilot and had a sailing license.  John was known for his craftsmanship creating custom knives.  He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church.

Marcia Atkins
Marcia Tindall Atkins

22 May, 1938 ~ 2 October, 2024

Charter Member

Marcia was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and wife (her husband, Sam, is the very first entry on this page).  She was passionate about her family but also had a deep love of genealogy and the historical story behind her family and everyone she encountered.  She was always eager to assist others in investigating their family history, and often created beautiful books to preserve their lineage for years to come.  These treasures included both pictures and documents, requiring hours of research to complete, and were always given as a gift of her love and devotion.

She was a devoted member of the Douglas County Genealogical Society and served it well for many years.  She was a prolific contributor to the society newsletter (The Skint Chestnut Logs), and served as the newsletter editor for a number of years.  She was instrumental in the creation of the Heritage Book of Douglas County, and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  In addition, she donated both time and effort to the Douglas County Cemetery Preservation Commission in its mission to preserve and protect grave sites in the county.

Marcia served the Society well from the very beginning, in any capacity requested of her.  Marcia was truly loved by all who knew her, and will be sorely missed.
